Binnall of America - Paul Kimball & Beyond Best Evidence

I make my return this week to one of my two favourite podcasts, Binnall of America (the other favourite being Radio Misterioso, of course). Here is the description of the episode from Tim:
Full Preview: We kick things off by diving right in to discussion on Beyond Best Evidence, as Paul talks about the 2 month fundraising campaign we have organized and reflects on the process and how things have gone so far. Paul also responds to some specific critics and criticisms of the campaign by explaining more about the origins of the 'crowd sourcing' concept for the film. He then addresses the future of the film, considering the tepid response to the fundraising campaign. Wrapping up the focus on Beyond Best Evidence, Paul then talks about the thematic goals of the film and why it stands apart from the standard cable TV UFO fare.
The conversation then leads to discussion on UFO research, in general, and Paul talks about the 'underground war' between 'Michael Bay Ufology' and the people who are looking at the phenomenon from a different angle. This leads to Paul talking about the paradox and challenges of UFO disclosure that he believes are being ignored by most Ufologists. We then ponder the idea that perhaps the human race, and America in particular, was actually better equipped to deal with the UFO phenomenon back when the modern era started in the late 1940's and 50's. We also examine the issue of Ufology's malaise of recent years and Paul talks about what sort of aspects of the field still excite him.
We then get ultra meta on Ufology and the paranormal by discussing the problems surrounding specialization, trying to understand the unknown, and attempts to win over the mainstream, whether it is science or public interest. Paul then talks about how examining the issue of a non-human intelligence could lead us towards becoming an 'empathic society.' Paul then talks about how people who don't vote don't have a right to complain and draws comparisons from that perspective to the paranormal community, at large.
This leads to some discussion on how some laypeople in the paranormal expect researchers and members of the media to sacrifice their time and money for the 'higher calling' of chasing these mysteries. Going down a different path, we get Paul's take on 2012 and the hype leading up to the big day. Paul ends up discussing Peter Gersten's 2012 suicide plan and the backlash against it from the UFO community. He also talks about how 2012 could allow for personal growth for many people, regardless of what actually happens. In turn, we also examine the question of whether or not the vast majority of people, nowadays, are even capable of that kind of introspection.
Paul also talks about the paradox of perceived power and how the influence of people who create ideas and concepts often outlives the contributions of their contemporaries who wield political power. Given that Paul says this is his last interview regarding Beyond Best Evidence and that BBE will be his last UFO film, we ask the natural question of whether or not this means he is leaving the paranormal behind for good or if he has other plans.
Heading toward the close of the conversation, we break the 4th wall and address the interview, where Paul seemed to talk much more than Binnall, and discuss podcasting, in general. We also talk about where Beyond Best Evidence goes from here, now that the fundraising stage of the project is coming to a close. Wrapping things up, we find out how people can donate to help Beyond Best Evidence get made and things then break down as we talk about BoA:Audio dropping our 'popular' theme music intros as well as the BoA thongs we used to sell when the website first started.
Listen to the full episode here.

As always, great chatting with my good friend Tim, who was doing the podcasting thing before just about anyone else, and thanks to everyone who has contributed to Beyond Best Evidence so far.

James Carrion coming to The Other Side of Truth

A programming note: I'll be interviewing James Carrion, the former International Director of MUFON, for The Other Side of Truth podcast on February 15th, to be aired on the 16th. We'll be talking about the current brouhaha at MUFON, of course, but we'll be concentrating on something of far more interest and importance, namely the relationship between the various intelligence agencies and the civilian groups and Internet forums devoted to the UFO subject. For some background information, check out James' most recent blog post, How To Take Down a UFO Organization 101.

If you have any questions you want me to ask James, feel free to leave them as a comment. No promises, but I'll see what I can do.

Dave Sadler coming to The Other Side of Truth

Dave and I working on Ghost Cases, 2009.

My good friend, ace British paranormal researcher Dave Sadler, of the Unknown Phenomena Investigation Association, will be joining me Sunday evening for a no-holds barred conversation about the state of paranormal research in the United Kingdom, why he hates psychics, UFOs, ghosts... and whatever else pops to mind. I'll have it posted by Monday at the podcast, and here at the blog.

Here's a clip of some footage from Ghost Cases with Dave explaining the background of a ghost story from the Bridestones, near Congleton.

Dave's most recent book, "Paranormal Reality: Ghosts, UFOs and Pussy Cats", can be purchased here.

Kevin Randle on The Other Side of Truth - next week!

Just a note to let folks know that I'll be interviewing Kevin Randle next week for my podcast, The Other Side of Truth.

Our discussion will center primarily around two subjects which Kevin has researched extensively - animal mutilations, and the abduction phenomenon.

Needless to say, we'll be taking the kind of skeptical look at these two areas that you don't often hear on other paranormal-related programs.

I'll let everyone know when it will be available - I anticipate next Friday.

Stanton T. Friedman - Part III (Marcel and Brazel)

In this episode of my ongoing interview series with Stan Friedman, recorded on September 12 and 13, 2001, Stan talks about two of the key witnesses to the Roswell incident, Major Jesse Marcel, and Mack Brazel. Along the way, he also takes a few shots at Karl Pflock, Colonel Richard Weaver, Captain Sheridan Cavitt, and Robert Todd, for reasons which I think are pretty clear, and which I address in my introduction.

Stanton Friedman interview - Part I (Roswell)

The first in a series of excerpts from a 11 1/2 hour long interview I conducted with Stan Friedman on September 12th and 13th, 2001, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, for the film Stanton T. Friedman is Real.

In this segment, Stan talks about how he discovered the Roswell case, and gives a breakdown of why he thinks it was the crash of two alien spacecraft in 1947.

Binnall & O'Conner on The Other Side of Truth

In the summer of 2007 I was visited here in Nova Scotia by my friend Tim Binnall, host of the Binnall of America podcast. While he was here, we took the opportunity to attend the annual Explore Oak Island Days festival / conference on the province’s south shore, near the legendary island of alleged buried treasure. Tim and I pitched a tent at a nearby campground, hung out, drank a lot of beer (and I mean a lot), and talked about all sorts of esoteric and paranormal subjects. I had a DV camera with me to conduct some interviews and film some lectures at the conference, and one afternoon when we had nothing better to do, I decided to ask Tim a few questions. I’ve included that exchange in this episode, as well as a couple of excerpts from an interview I conducted with Oak Island researcher D’Arcy O’Connor, who wrote The Secret Treasure of Oak Island: The Amazing True Story of a Centuries-Old Treasure Hunt.

Greg Bishop on The Other Side of Truth podcast

Early in the morning on May 26, 2010, I recorded this interview with my good friend Greg Bishop. In a true “coast to coast” episode (I was in Halifax, on the east coast of Canada, and Greg was in Los Angeles), we discussed remote viewing, including Greg’s own experience back in the 1990s, the paranormal in general, free thinking, skepticism, Carl Sagan and the way that science can inspire, and the “thought box” that we have allowed ourselves to be put in (I refer to it as “intellectual suicide”). I think we also managed at least one reference to baseball as well.

All this, and so much more… only on The Other Side of Truth!

Dr. Benson Saler - Roswell and the Making of a Modern Myth, Part III

The final installment of my 2001 interview with Brandeis University anthropologist Dr. Benson Saler. In this part, we discuss the Roswell myth as a cultural phenomenon, and also the role that conspiracies play in contemporary society.

Dr. Benson Saler - Roswell and the Making of a Modern Myth, Part II

In part 2 of the interview I conducted in 2001 with Brandeis University anthropologist Dr. Benson Saler, co-author of UFO Crash at Roswell: The Genesis of a Modern Myth, we examine the Roswell incident as a modern myth, how conspiracy theory plays into it (and what it says about us), and how in many respects the belief in Roswell as an ET event (and, I might add, the disbelief of the Roswell “atheists”) mirrors religion. All this, and I make a comment or two about the new mythmakers of Roswell, such as Anthony Bragalia, and what their efforts portend for the future of the Roswell myth.

Mac Tonnies on the cryptoterrestrials

The latest from the Other Side of Truth podcast - the late Mac Tonnies discusses his cryptoterrestrial hypothesis for the UFO phenomenon, and compares it to the extraterrestrial hypothesis, in these excerpts from an interview I conducted with him in Kansas City, Missouri, in May, 2006.
